Syphilis testing: blood tests, past treatment and next steps
Learn why symptoms can fade, what a reactive result may mean and what to discuss with a clinician.

Symptoms can change without treatment
A painless sore or a rash can occur with syphilis. Symptoms can fade while infection remains, and some people notice none. If you are concerned about possible exposure, speak to a clinician even if the symptoms have gone. If you are pregnant, raise the concern promptly with your prenatal care team.
Read results in context
Clinicians often interpret two types of blood tests together, such as an RPR and a treponemal test. A treponemal result can stay reactive after treatment, so bring previous results and treatment dates. A clinician may recommend repeat testing if exposure was very recent, assess partners' need for testing and explain how to check response after treatment.
